The Geography of K-pop

The geography of k-pop

K-pop is relatively new having started in the late 1980s. One of the earliest Kpop groups was Seo Taiji and Boys forming in 1992, they experimented and used different styles and genres of music like Hip-Hop, Rap Rock, Pop and Alternative. Their first three albums had each sold over 1.6 million copies with the fourth nearing two million.

The modern kpop idol culture that people associate with kpop today began with the boy band H.O.T. in 1996, they were very popular with teens and young adults and thus began the kpop craze. Groups like TVXQ! and singer BoA became popular in places like Japan and are still doing kpop to today.

With social media becoming increasingly popular things can spread and go viral easily and quickly this has helped kpop become popular worldwide in countries such as Mexico, Taiwan, the USA, Brazil and the Philippines. The two most popular korean pop groups at the moment are probably EXO and BTS. Though Big Bang are seen as the kings of K-pop having been the most successful and starting in 2006 with their hit songs BANG BANG BANG having 264 Million views and Fantastic Baby having 318 Million views.
