Introduction

In this blog I will be discussing both big and popular kpop groups and the lesser known, underappreciated kpop groups.

But first how about a general introduction to kpop. K-pop is Korean pop, it is a large industry where Korean boys and girls train for an average of 4 to 5 years from the age of around 12 to 13. There are many large companies/record labels which produce these Korean idols and music. The record labels hold auditions every year to find new kpop idols. The biggest, well known record labels that have very successful groups are S.M entertainment, YG entertainment, JYP entertainment  some popular groups that came from S.M entertainment are the likes of EXO, NCT, SHINee, Girls Generation, Super Junior, f(x) and Red Velvet. Some popular groups that came from YG entertainment are Big Bang, PSY, 2NE1, iKON and WINNER. JYP entertainment have 2PM, Got7, DAY6 and TWICE.

But what makes these groups successful and not others? Well the company they come from definitely has a big impact. If you’re a group coming from one of the big 3 you’re almost guaranteed success whereas if you’re coming from a company nobody knows, it’s gonna be a bit harder. This is probably because these big companies know what works and what people like, so they stick to the recipe they know and a group comes out popular every time. That’s not to say that all groups from, say JYP are the same, for example DAY6 and TWICE. DAY6 are an all-male kpop/rock band that actually play their own instruments, whereas TWICE are an all-female group kpop that don't play their own instruments and act cute.
Other factors are music, obviously, good looks and style, good concepts for music videos and having a good rapper, dancer, visual and vocal line.
